Introducing Your New Baby to Your Pet E-mail
Making the initial introductions is something that many new parents dread.  No matter how well prepared they feel they are, introducing the new bundle of joy to the family pet can be very stressful.  Relax, this is something that can be a very simple process and as long as you are prepared will go smoothly.  Parents handle this each and every day and your pet will handle this successfully as well.

Tip 1.  Have someone bring a piece of clothing with the new baby’s scent into the house for your pet to smell before hand.  This will allow your pet to become acquainted with the smell of the baby before ever meeting the baby.

Tip 2.  Once you arrive home, have someone else hold the baby while you greet your pet.  Spend a few minutes with your pet so that they realize that you still love them.  Remember, you will have been gone for a couple of days and your pet misses you.  This gives your pet a few minutes with you alone before meeting the baby.

Tip 3.  Have someone bring the baby to you, while you are still with your pet.  This will allow you to remain by your pets side, as the baby comes in.  Postpone the introductions if your baby becomes fussy or starts crying loudly.  Allow your pet to see and smell the baby, but do not allow your pet to climb onto the baby in any way.

Tip 4.  While your house is going to be hectic, especially in those first few days try to maintain a normal routine as much as possible.  This serves the purpose of helping get your baby on a normal schedule, as well as keeping your pet on their normal schedule.  The sooner everyone gets back onto a normal routine the better.

Tip 5.  Integrate your baby into routine tasks for your pet.  For example, while a newborn cannot help feed the pet, they can accompany you to take the dog for a walk, or to let the cat out.  This allows your pet to see that they too can enjoy the activities that you enjoy together.

Tip 6.  Spend a few minutes each day with your pet alone.  They need your love and attention as well, and if you ensure that you give them attention, they will be less likely to view the new baby as an enemy.  You want to encourage a positive relationship in every aspect, so keep your pet from feeling as if the baby has replaced them by ensuring plenty of one-on-one time is given.

Life with a new baby is difficult, but with these simple tips, you can successfully introduce your baby with your pet.  As time goes on, and your baby grows you can enjoy walks as a family, as well as playing in the backyard together.  Until then, a positive relationship between baby and pet will be a huge help towards bonding later.

Coming Home

It is always exciting when you decide to add a new member to the family, whether it is a child, or a furbaby.  However, a furbaby requires almost as much preparation as a real baby does, if you stop and think about it.

Reward?
